PREFACE
by Prof. Dr. Julio Garganta (University of Porto, Portugal)In the beginning it was a game and this game went
on to transcend the designs of sport and became one of the most amazing social wonders
mankind has ever experienced. This phenomenon was given the nickname FOOTBALL, which in
turn despite some difficulties that stubbornly persist, has had many days of glory and
excitement.
As based on the Friedrich Nietzsche
quote, if man is a being who plays, then football coaches are creatures who create the
play. In this context, it seems legitimate to ask them that, in addition to
promoting the appreciation of the sport as a cultural heritage of mankind, that they are
the architects of outstanding performances and shows that are aesthetically attractive.
Nevertheless, the coaching function apart
from being exposed to increased instability due to games scores, takes on an increasingly
broad role that depends on the systematic and continued training of players and, above
all, the coordination and assembly of teams.
While accepting the honorable invitation
from Luís Peazê to preface the "Heuristic Chart of Soccer Coach, we have been
afforded the opportunity to pay a deserved tribute to this useful and fair proposal.
This chart is useful as it contains the
mapping and assessment of skills and competencies of a soccer coach. It is fair as it does
complies with the powers that affect the coach in the complexity of his duties and doesn't
allow the examiner, or indeed whoever uses the chart, to use it in a superficial manner
and without giving in to easy or sterile reductionism.
For those less observant, a work of this
kind runs the risk of giving the impression that the author plans to end the chapter of
assessment of the soccer coach. Furthermore, it may lead to the dangerous illusion that it
seeks to broker an ideal profile of a soccer coach and that soccer coach candidates
should seek a common zenith.
If that is the intention of the author,
we would certainly place ourselves in a place of disagreement, because we admit
that instead of seeking an ideal profile, it is important to understand how each one can
find and appreciate how to become a coach, even taking different training methods and
styles of leadership into consideration, to understand and get to know football.
But the fact that the word
heuristic appears in the title of the work already raises something positive
and the contacts undertaken with Luís Peazê and the reading of the manual of usage
helped dispel our few concerns. We therefore realize that the author intended to
cast and devise a set of attributes in order to assist in the characterization of soccer
coaches (both genders) in order to further understand the pattern and grasp the matrix of
his relevant technical identity, taking into account various constraints he or she faces
as part of their activity.
There is a considerable difference
between looking and seeing. To that extent, as the "Heuristic Chart of Soccer
Coach by Luís Peazê is not a definitive tool, it can help discern the relevant
singularities of the football/soccer coach rather than prescribe the standardization of
its skills, abilities and competencies.
Therefore, we appeal to potential readers
and users of the chart, to be impartial when looking at it.
